Principal incidents that happened during the cruise of the U.S. steam frigate Minesota [sic] in the East Indies / by Jos. E. Vantine, 1857-1858.

Detailed holograph account of the voyage of the U.S. Steam Frigate Minnesota to China, Japan, and India. Under the command of Captain Samuel Du Pont, the Minnesota was on a mission to deliver Mr. Reed, an American minister, to China. The journal includes accounts of a burial at sea, descriptions of English and French bombardment of Chinese forts and the habits and customs of the Japanese and Chinese, and life aboard a pre-Civil War man-of-war. A Chinese currency note is pasted in the front fly-leaf, and a wedding poem clipped from a newspaper is laid in at the first page. The journal is accompanied by photocopies of several documents pertaining to assignment of Vantine's pension to his widow Susan.
